Coveted Gold Standard Roses at Fryer’s
In the world of roses, Gold Standard Roses are a highly sought after award and testament to a grower’s expertise and ability.
The Gold Standard Trials are a combined initiative between professional rose breeders represented by BARB (British Association of Rose Breeders) and NIAB (National Institute of Agricultural Botany). Breeders pay a fee for each rose variety they submit to the assessment, which is independently managed by NIAB at their HQ in Cambridge.
Each trial covers a two year period and information is collated from independent judges, with the prestigious Gold Standard only awarded to varieties deemed worthy of this accolade.
Coming under scrutiny are health, flowering ability, scent and commercial appeal.
The first trial was planted in 2004, the results of which were revealed in autumn 2006. Autumn 2007 saw with a seven more roses joining the original 'magnificent seven' giving fourteen varieties bearing the hard won 'Gold Standard' label. In 2008 eleven more varieties joined the elite Gold Standard roses stable.
Fryer’s roses has been extremely successful and has been awarded Gold Standard Roses year on year since the trials began.

- 2006 DANCING QUEEN (Fryfestoon); a Climber bred by Fryer’s Roses
- 2007 TICKLED PINK (Fryhunky); a Floribunda bred by Fryer's Roses also Rose of the Year 2007
- 2008 NURSE TRACEY (Frykookie); a Floribunda bred by Fryer's Roses
- 2008 LUCKY! (Frylucy); a Floribunda bred by Fryer's Roses also Rose of the Year 2009
- 2008 FREE SPIRIT (Fryjeru); a Floribunda bred by Fryer's Roses
- 2009 SUPER TROUPER (Fryleyeca); a Floribunda bred by Fryer's Roses also voted Novelty Rose 2010
