Background information
Arthur Fryer began growing roses commercially on a small plot of land in 1912. From humble beginnings his reputation as a supplier of excellent quality rose trees grew throughout the region. With the acquisition of more land the business expanded and moved to the present site in 1928.
After the war Arthur was joined by his two sons and together they built up an extensive mail order business, attending all the major flower shows, with their roses gaining international acclaim.
The business is now run by Gareth Fryer, grandson of the founder and is one of the largest producers in the country. As in 1912, it is still Fryer's aim to provide what they consider to be the best varieties of roses for garden display and all round reliability. Their passion for roses is combined with a commitment to meticulous quality.
In 1999 Fryer's were honoured to be one of the first recipients of The Queen Mother's International Rose Award, a prestigious new accolade in the rose world. The award established by The Royal National Rose Society recognises outstanding achievements in the raising of new cultivars.
Fryers new roses have gained major awards from all over the world, including two All America Award Winners (the Oscars of the rose world), a Rose of the Year in new Zealand, A Golden Rose Award from The Hague and four UK Rose of the Years.
This year not only has Fryer's rose Lucky! been awarded Rose of the Year, but their rose Super Trouper has been crowned Novelty Rose 2010. In addition Fryers have received a Gold Medal from The Hague for their Climbing Rose Dizzy Heights.
Lucky! also gained a Certificate of Merit from the rose trials in Belfast with the yellow floribunda Golden Smiles picking up a Silver Medal in Glasgow and a bronze prize for the best floribunda in trials at Gifu in Japan. Tickled Pink also received a Certificate of Merit from Glasgow.
